5 Reasons To Do A Joint Disciple Now

I’ve been in youth ministry for over five years, and one of the events I always look forward to is Disciple Now weekend. If you don’t know what Disciple Now is, it’s a weekend retreat filled with worship, bible studies, fellowships, and mission projects. Students stay at host homes, and in some sense, it’s like a wee

Winter Retreat - Better Together

Over the last few years, a group of churches from our local network has started making a winter retreat to Monadnock Bible Conference in Jaffrey, N.H. an annual, joint event. It started with two of us going together in 2010. Each year since we have had another church join us. There are already conversations about a fifth joining us next year! Through this simple partnership

Lasting Change

It was September 19th last fall when my friend and illusionist, AJ and I headed to the high school in Negaunee, Michigan in the upper peninsula of Michigan for two assembly programs and a rally presented to 730 students. AJ brought down the house with his gravity-defying performance. Hearts were softened and defenses came down.

5 Reasons I'm Excited About Youth Ministry in 2013...

People often ask me what I think about the future of youth ministry. My response usually surprises them. I am VERY excited about the future of youth ministry. As a matter of fact 2013 could be youth ministry’s break out year. This may be the year that…

1. A lack of budget triggers a more mature approach to youth ministry.

Better Together: Fighting Slavery

You know that student ministry is hard work. I know student ministry is hard work. So the idea of networking together with another youth group to do something together sounds likes making your job even harder.

On top of that, consider the concerns that come when you network; like "what if my students like the other pastor more than me?"  A youth pastor friend of mine from Texas shared with me that his senior pastor and parents don't really like the idea of networking because the other churches are either to liberal or to conservative and “we don't want our kids exposed to their bad theology”.

WINNER!

Grace Mendenhall of Columbia, South Carolina was the winner of a week of free vacation in Myrtle Beach at our drawing at the Youth Specialties National Youth Worker Convention, November 18.

Grace was one of many members who visited the NNYM display at NYWC in Dallas.

Grace and her husband have a unique youth ministry role. A Colorado native, she works at Columbia International University, where Kyle is the new head men's basketball coach.

Her day job at CIU helps feed her youth ministry habit: she coaches a club volleyball team of 13-year-old girls, as well as the volleyball team at a Christian school. She shared with us that the club team gives her the chance to reach out: "Most of my team does not attend church."

The week in Myrtle will be a perfect getaway for her and her family, most of whom still live in Colorado. As you can see in the photo, she was pretty excited to win.

Congratulations Grace!

American Bible Challenge

OK, GSNTV has shared the news that casting is underway for season two of the American Bible Challenge. If you, your youth group or those Bible scholars you work with are interested in being on the show head to their official casting page for details on how to try out.

Why Student Pastors Need Other Student Pastors

I have been thinking about writing a post on this topic for a long time now because I believe it’s an important subject. Every time I think about this topic, Bill Withers classic song “Lean on Me” comes to mind. It’s true that as student pastors, we need other

Every!

Almost all my best friends are youth leaders in the six youth networks in our area. When I meet with these friends from Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Assembly of God, Free Methodist, Wesleyan, and charismatic churches, I see God at work in more ways than I ever could have imagined. I must agree with Bill Hybels (Willow Creek Community Church) when he said, “The local ch

Partnering in Netville

As the 18 youth workers sat around indulging their brownbag lunches, clusters of four and five laughed and chided each other over the personal anecdotes they had experienced over the past few weeks. The monthly Netville Youth Worker Coalition meeting was about to begin, and this informal bantering around the room was a vital element of their gathering.

Dan Maltby (1947 - 2012)

On October 1, Dan Maltby, one of the Network founders, went to be with the Lord at age 65.

Dan battled early onset Alzheimer's and is survived by his wife Dee, daughters Lauren Maltby and Jessica Goulet and their son and Dan's grandson, Chasdan Goulet. The service was held October 5, 2012 in Fullerton, California.

Dan was the organizer of the first Network Forum in 1979, helped found the Network in 1981, and served for many years on the Network's Board of Directors.

This article, Ministering With Open Hands, written by Dan gives an interesting story about the vision and spirit that inspired the birth of the Network.

Recruiting Youth Ministry Volunteers

Youthworkers are always asking the same question.

How can I get more help?!

It doesn’t take you long as a youth worker before you figure out this is the whole youth ministry game: recruiting, training, and deploying leaders. You are only as good as your team. You can only reach as many students as you ha

Why Network? Part 4 - Partnerships

People in every sphere of our culture speak of unity, of partnership - hoping to work together for a common cause.  Yet, our everyday experience reveals that unity is often an idyllic dream, or given only lip service by politicians or power brokers to gain support for a cause for which they want “your support.”

August YouthWorker Journal

You’ve probably heard the question: Why can’t today’s kids just grow up?

In this digital issue of YouthWorker Journal, we get answers from Chap Clark, Robert Epstein, Amy Jacober, Jeffrey Arnett, Lauren Winner, Kelly Lashly, Jeff Baxter, Rick Dunn and Jana Sundene.

Some people call the new reality “emerging adulthood.” Others say, “21 is the new 16.” However you describe it, these authors and experts can help you figure out the best ways to help your students grow up.

Fundraising for Mission Trips

Often times, fundraising for your upcoming mission trip can get a bit stale. Every year it's the same old ideas - bake sales, car washes and having the students do work for people within your church. As these tend to work time and time again, sometimes giving can start to diminish.

Here are a handful of creative ideas to help keep your fundraising fresh:

Why Network? Part 2 - Equipping

Ever feel alone in ministry? Boy, I sure have. I remember one time being so depressed that I could not even get off the floor to go to speak at my youth group. Isolation, abandonment and desperation can all combine to push us away from those who can help us most. Thankfully, I had friends in ministry who took the initiative and helped me work through my issues. But

Why Are We Better Together? (Part 1)

Our society places a high value on rugged individuality. Many a hero sweeps in, saves the damsel, and defeats the enemy all on their own. Maybe there is a sidekick along for the ride. However, when it comes to transforming the lives of millions of teenagers, no one can do it alone.

What Happens When Leaders Pray

What would happen if you get leaders from major youth ministry organizations to come together for a day of prayer?

Last week I was privileged to attend when NNYM gathered together 15 leaders in Costa Mesa, CA for a prayer consultation. Mike Higgs, founder of Sondance Inc. and Barry St. Clair, Director of Reach-Out co-led the event. Here is their summary of what happened.

After The Dust Settles: Confessions of a Newsboys Advance Man

I want to care about more than putting “butts in seats.”

As a 20-year local church youth ministry veteran, I have seen, more times than I can count, traveling ministries that care more about filling venues for their events than truly partnering with the local church. Many show complete disregard for how their ministry impacts the people who are the gatekeepers in the community.

How Your Ministry Network Grows

Do you feel stuck as you try to work together with others in reaching teenagers in your community? You may have been there from the beginning of your network -- it is pretty exciting to launch an effort to unite those  in a community for youth ministry. But now that the newness has worn off and some of the core team may have moved to other

Building Effective Youth Ministry Partnerships

You may be starting out in ministry or have been there for decades. Either way you may have realized that no one should do youth ministry alone. However, it can be a real struggle building partnerships to reach and equip teenagers in your community.

Sustaining a Partnership for 17 Years

This weekend, my wonderful wife Donna and I leave for Russia to lead our seventeenth mission trip there. Those who know me understand that these two weeks in Russia are a part of my “second life.” I love the opportunity to get back to Russia and focus on reaching out to non-believing youth in a foreign culture as well as ministering to a great group of youth from the USA. We will be joined by another group from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida who will help us host a five day English camp for selected students from Moscow.

The Newsboys Prove "Better Together"

According to a recent USA Today/Gallup poll, Vermont is ranked as the 50th least religious state, or stated another way, we are the least churched state in the entire country. This is likely because Vermonters see themselves as ruggedly independent, capable of making it on their own, and skeptical of any need for salvation other than one of their own making.

Want to Network with the Newsboys?

The Newsboys are being intentional about evangelism on their "God's Not Dead" tour for 2012. They have asked gifted evangelist and my boss, Bob Lenz, to partner with them by giving a clear Gospel message at each city they vist. In order to keep this from being a tour that simply passes through an area entertaining folks, I will be working with friend and coleaugue Kris Wood to network in each city on the tour.

November YouthWorker Journal

Youth workers are famous for action, but less so for reflection.

The new digital issue of YouthWorker Journal addresses this deficit. Chap Clark, Scot McKnight, Amy Jacober, Andrew Root, Eugene Peterson, Mark Cannister, Dave Rahn and Gordon MacDonald offer their insights on the biblical and theological foundations of youth ministry.

Don’t miss this issue of YWJ. We hope it helps you answer the WHY questions before you get wrapped up in the pressing HOW questions of youth ministry.

Why Bother?

If you are on this site, chances are you are already well aware of youth worker networking.  You have probably come across NNYM, denominational networks or other grassroots efforts to rally the youth worker troops.

But one of the major questions I hear (from those that I think have not benefitted from networking yet) is, "Why bother?"  "What is the point of networking?  I mean Wes, don't you know that I already have too much on my plate and I have parents knocking on my door, students needing my attention and a pastor who doesn't really get why I do what I do, not to mention my family at home?"....I hear you.

Extended Adolescence And You

Adolescence cannot last from 11 years old to 29 years old. Our society will crumble economically & socially under the pressure.

I think most people understand that intuitively. They reflect on their teenage years and their early twenties as a time of coming of age.

But times have changed. Most sociologists believe adolescence stretches from the onset of puberty (11-12 years old) until the late 20s. In other words, the adolescence you and I knew is now 8-10 years LONGER than when we went through it just 20 years ago.

Digital YouthWorker Journal

Is it October already? It must be, because we’re sending you the October 2011 digital edition of YouthWorker Journal.

We think you and your students will enjoy these articles:

  • How youth workers can encourage “Spiritual Creatives” in their groups.

Look for us at National Youth Workers Convention

If you are at National Youth Workers Convention hosted by Youth Specialties look for us in the exhibit hall. Come by and get connected! We would love to meet you and see how you are working together to reach teenagers.

In San Diego you can connect with some our staff members like Len Evans, Mike De Vito, and Aaron Babyar.

Also, take a look at the "We Love our Youth Worker" booth in the hall.  At this booth you can find out the 7 promises churches need to encourage healthy youth workers.

Here is a video from Kevin Alexander from the Irvine Network who came by our booth Friday. He shares why collaborating with other youth leaders is important to him. If you have networking stories to share come by and we woud love to hear them!

While you are waiting...

Often I am asked, "What do I do to stay current and relevant while I am in-between ministry jobs?" In the current economic environment, that's a question that is being asked more and more and is a worthwhile conversation. Below are a few things that I would encourage if you find yourself in that situation.

Jeremy Riddle - Furious

Vineyard Worship artist and worship leader Jeremy Riddle has announced the release of his new studio album entitled, Furious. The album is set for release on September 20 via NewDay Distribution.

Riddle began production on the album nearly a year ago with Dove Award winning producer Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, David Crowder Band) at the helm. Cash’s contribution forms the backbone of the album which also features production from Bobby Hartry, a long time Riddle collaborator. The project follows Prepare The Way: Live, an album recorded in front of a live audience in Corpus Christi, Tex., earlier this year from Vineyard.

September YouthWorker Journal

Are young people really leaving the church in droves as some studies say? If so, what can we do to develop deeper ties between youth and communities of faith?

In this months digital issue of YouthWorker Journal we sought answers and articles from: Kenda Creasy Dean, Mike King, Heidi Hagstrom, Dick Hardel, Dave Rahn, Kara Powell, Brad Griffin, Drew Dyck, Lars Rood and more!

A Walk In My Shoes

Ever judge someone just by looking at them? Of course, we've all made snap judgments about people. But what if we really got to know them? How would our opinions change? And what if we were forced to become them... how would the shoes fit then?

Game Time: Tackling the Past

Pro football star Jake Walker is living the dream… or so he thinks. The veteran tight end is a fan favorite and on pace to set the all-time receiving yards record that will guarantee him a spot in the Hall of Fame. While working out at training camp, Jake receives an unexpected call from his brother Dean – their father Frank has suffered a major heart attack. Jake immediately leaves practice and returns to Riverton, North Carolina, the small hometown he’s avoided for nearly 15 years. Memories of glory and regret flood his mind as he returns to the family and friends he abandoned in pursuit of his career. Jake dutifully visits with Frank and Dean, but hurt and misunderstanding from the past begins to resurface, leaving him counting the days until he can return to his team.

Women of Faith and NNYM

WOMEN OF FAITH has a fantastic new program, called WOMEN OF FAITH GIVES BACK, they’ve implemented in efforts to bless their cities.

With 21,634 first time decisions for Christ just last year, they know that to maximize what God is doing they need to partner with others in their city with the “Same Heart”, in bringing more of Christ to our cities!  SO they are joining forces with NNYM  in efforts for their ticket sales to be able to bless us financially.

Our first opportunity is for the event in Anaheim, CA, but we must act FAST as our deadline for this offer is Monday, August 16th!

Would you consider sharing this with the ladies to join us at WOMEN OF FAITH which will in turn bless NNYM financially in some pretty significant ways.

HERE ARE TWO WAYS YOU CAN HELP US REACH OUR GOAL!

August YouthWorker Journal

Do you have any “broken” kids in your ministry? They’re the focus of articles in the August digital issue ofYouthWorker Journal, which we’re passing on to you thanks to our partnership with YWJ.

We start with “Kids At the Margins” by Chap Clark. This is a new chapter in Chap’s latest book Hurt 2.0.

Who is Simon Miller?

We have partnered with Moms 4 Family TV, a bunch of regular moms working to make televesion relevant. Instead of complaining about the lack of good family programs they created the Family Movie Night initiative.

Family Movie Night has reached millions of viewers all across America. The most recent movie, Field of Vision, was a significant success on Saturday, June 11th. Over three million households watched the movie and many lives were touched by the messages of honesty and empathy.

The opportunity to watch great entertainment with "teachable moments" has created a wonderful way for families to interact and discuss important universal truths like trust and forgivness. Now the latest in the Family Movie Night series, Who is Simon Miller?, is set to air August 6, 2011 on NBC.

Dreaming Big For God

You know, it's one thing to ask your students to dream big for God. It's another thing when they actually start doing it.  Read one youth pastor's story of what God did when he challenged his youth to dream big...and they did.

3 FREE Devotions On Connecting With What God Is Doing

We have another great recource from our friends at ym360. They are committed to equipping youth workers with Bible Study resources that are Bible focused, creative, and culturally relevant. These FREE devotions are a simple way of demonstrating this commitment.

The newset set of FREE devotions are titled "Plugging In: 3 Devotions On Connecting With What God Is Doing."

The devotions focus on being on mission with God is the call of all Christ-followers. Yet, God can’t use us if we’re not plugged-in to what He’s doing.

TrueU: Is the Bible Reliable? DVD set

Is the Bible historically accurate?

The Scriptures claim to be an inspired message from God — but can students (or their parents) confidently and reasonably defend biblical beliefs—and the Bible itself - when peers or university professors challenge their worldview?

From the creators of The Truth Project comes TrueU, an engaging DVD series that presents undeniable facts supporting a Christian worldview to equip youth to defend their faith, especially in public university.

Field of Vision - Family Movie Night

May YouthWorker Journal

We are pleased to give you access to the brand new digital YouthWorker Journal on youth evangelism.

The issue features articles on the why and how of evangelism with Fred Lynch, Greg Stier, Chris Hill, Sean McDowell, Jim Candy, Jeff Baxter, John Wilkinson, Bruce Fawcett and others as they explore what it means to reach young people.

There are also updates on how Young Life, Youth for Christ, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Youth Alpha reach kids.

You Might Be A Yellow Network If...

If church youth workers still see para-church ministry as competition, you might be a yellow network.

If the para-church still think there are students who would never darken the door of a church, you might be a yellow network.

Are You On Board To Impact A Generation?

This September 21-25, pro and amatuer athletes, youth pastors, company owners, artists, musicians and youth workers will gather together at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the 2011 Skate & Action Sports Conference.

Wakeboarders, skateboarders, surfers, bmx riders, motocross riders, and even snowboarders will flock to the area. They will be taking part in a 4-day conference that will equip and encourage them as they reach out to a generation of youth impacted around the world by things like violence, drug use, broken homes, and suicide.

God Is A Dreamer

Last week I had the chance to chat with Jeff Goins from Adventures in Missions about a new project he is working on. The project is called Kingdom Dreams, which is a new approach to helping people find their ministry calling.

Kingdom Dreams desires to inspire, equip and resource people to pursue one's God-given dreams and passions. It's the catalyst for the next generation of Christians focused on changing the world. It offers people the space, freedom, guidance, and confidence to dream and experiment, through the channel of meaningful personal connections.

Evangephobia!

Evangelism. For many, this word conjures up images of a street-corner preacher or a madman using a bullhorn and thumping people on the head with a Bible. But are those the only options?

Join Greg Stier, president of Dare 2 Share Ministries, for a lively, interactive webcast about sharing our faith and its role in youth ministry.

You and other youth leaders will explore some of the common fears surrounding evangelism, learn how it can help accelerate spiritual growth in your teenagers, and discover simple steps you can take to make it fit within your current youth ministry.

If Bulgarian youth workers ruled the world...

What would it look like? Honestly, probably a bit messy! Even the nicest, gentlest most godly Bulgarian turns into a monster behind the wheel of a car. But putting that to one side, I think it could be a better place....

Here's what those of us in EEA21, the European sister movement to NNYM, think we can all learn from Bulgaria:

Middle School Ministry Campference

It's camp for junior high youth workers!

Let's be honest about this: it's not every adult who wakes up thinking, "How can I spend some time with 13 year-olds today, and influence them for Jesus?"

That calling, that wiring, is extremely unique and wonderful. And our wise and wonderful God, who cares so passionately about the young teens in your church, chose YOU! You are truly one of the few, one of the unique; and you are God’s plan for showing love to middle schoolers.

Doug Fields: Training Opportunities

It’s been a week since the Simply Youth Ministry Conference and I’ve been talking to some youth workers about other gatherings and trainings that are more frequent than a once-a-year, mega-conference. While I love the large gathering and enjoy seeing a bunch of fun youth workers together, I know it’s just one training option.

Here are some other training options that I’m excited about:

1. Being involved in a local network: I’m a huge believer that we’re “better together” and local youth workers should unite on a regular basis with others who are sharing trench work. While a network may not be considered official training, I always find myself learning from other workers who I dine, chat and hang with. If you’re not part of a local network, I highly encourage you to connect with the National Network of Youth Ministries and get connected… immediately! It could save your ministry and enhance your primary relationships!

New Type of Reality Show Features "Winning" Youth

We want you to know about The Real Winning Edge television series, which is now airing in syndication nationwide through September 2011. The Real Winning Edge is a program that encourages young people to see beyond their own circumstances and realize they are not alone in their struggles. It is a program that instills confidence in teenagers who are reaching for their own dreams, and delivers a strong message of hope and optimism for the future.

The series features real-life high school and college students who face challenges such as substance abuse or being abandoned by their parents. Each of the young people selected represents a sport or a field in the arts. The series documents how these youth have conquered the odds to achieve success in their field of talent, and also how they battle difficult circumstances and overcome them in their personal lives. This is the first series of its kind - directed to youth, with a faith message - to air on the FOX-owned stations and in national syndication on other network affiliate stations.

Here’s to doing a better job of the important work of youth ministry.

youthministry360 & Live Different

Recently I had a chance to talk to Les Bradford and Andy Blanks from youthministry360. If you are not familiar with them or their ministry, we wanted to introduce them to you and share some of their story.

nnym: When did you start youthministry360?
ym360: We officially launched youthministry360 on August 2, 2010, but we began working on the formation in March of 2010.

nnym: How did you both agree to work together?
ym360: We spent 11 combined years at a great youth ministry organization, Student Life. While there, we led the development and distribution of multiple lines of Bible Study Resources, both print and electronic. Through this work, God led us to see what we felt was a deep need in the youth ministry "landscape" for Bible Study Resources that created meaningful life change for students, while at the same time delivering incredible resources for teachers in an easy-to-teach format (and at a great value).

The Revolve Tour: Ministering to Girls

We understand how difficult and important it is for youth leaders to share relevant messages of hope and self worth to teenage girls everywhere. But how exactly can you do this?  What goes on in the hearts and minds of girls? What are ways you can make an eternal impact in the window you’re given?

The Revolve Tour wants to help you answer these questions. Revolve is a one-of-a-kind inspirational weekend for 6th to 12th grade girls that combines award-winning bands, dramas, and speakers with real, relevant messages. But Revolve is much more than just a fun time for girls. Since it began, more than 35,000 girls have indicated they made first-time decisions for Christ at a Revolve Tour event. More than 16,000 children have been sponsored through World Vision as a result of The Revolve Tour.

Groundwire

In my time here at NNYM I have seen a ton of great ministries that target spiritual seekers, but what about those people who are not aware they should be seeking. How are we going to share Biblical truth with youth and young adults who believe our message is outdated and answers irrelevant?

If they won't walk into our churches and they won’t seek out a spiritual voice, we must interrupt their lives...catch them off guard as they live their lives and inject truth that brings hope.

I recently met with Sean Dunn of Groundwire to learn more about

January YouthWorker Journal

We love technology, but we sometimes dislike what it does. How can we strike a balance?

The latest digital issue of YouthWorker Journal gathers experts, including Tim Schmoyer, Shane Hipps, Mark Bauerlein, Peggy Kendall, Adam McLane, Kelly Soifer and Walt Mueller to explore the theme of “Technology and Youth Culture.”

Have you experienced group meetings in which young people were more engaged with their digital devices than with the kids sitting near them?

Have you ever wondered which tech tools and websites could help your ministry and which ones are total wastes of time and energy?

These and other questions are addressed in the new digital YWJ

We hope the wisdom in these pages helps you get off to a great start in youth ministry in 2011.

7 Churches + 1 Parachurch Ministry = Community Impact!

What could networking look like in your city? Wes, a friend of mine who leads the network in our city, pointed me to this great video that he saw at the Youth Specialties website. It is about a town in Ohio that decided to work together to reach teenagers. As a result, they multiplied thier impact. In light of this video, Wes and I are asking the question, "What could youth ministry look like in our city as we continue to work together?"

Take a look and see the story and make your own conclusions. The original article can be found at www.youthspecialties.com.

December YouthWorker Journal

Are you more than your job description?

What do you do when the honeymoon is over at work?

Are your best years ahead of you or behind you?

Do you ever talk to God when you're not in front of your students, leading them in prayer?

These are some of the frank questions explored in the latest digital issue of YouthWorker Journal, which we provide to you free thanks to our partnership with YWJ.

To dive into articles by Walt Mueller, Barry Shafer and David Olshine, along with reviews and excerpts from the latest youth ministry books and resources, just open this link.

We hope it helps you in your all-important work with kids!

Facebook Application to Mobilize Thousands to Pray for Nation's Schools

A recent USA Today article suggests that only 15% of nearly 80 million millennials are Christian. Legislation has all but banned the teachings of Jesus Christ from the nation’s schools, but the power of prayer will soon be returning to a campus near you.

National Network of Youth Ministries (NNYM) has teamed up with a national prayer ministry, Intercessors for America (IFA) to create wePray, a Facebook application that allows Christians to mobilize prayer groups for schools in their communities. The web application is a communication channel where members can make prayer requests, host discussions, post photos and videos, and support others by indicating that they are also praying.

We Love Our Youth Worker

This year, as I start a new school year of ministry at my current church, I have realized that I am now the longest tenured church youth worker in my town and the third longest in the county that I live. For some, this may seem like an amazing accomplishment but in reality it really is more of a concern. It would be one thing if I could say that I was in my tenth year of ministry at my current church but this year only marks the beginning of my fourth. At four years, I shouldn't be the church Youth Ministry elder in my community.

Fields of Faith in Wisconsin

"If it wasn't for partnering with youth workers in Brown County there is no way we would have been able to pull of an event that reached over 600 people."

Starting the Community Network Conversation

What in the world is a community network?

It happens when we start working outside the walls of our church and assess how we can help teenagers in their neighborhoods and schools.

In San Diego, the Poway Unified School District Youth Workers Network is starting to push the envelope in reaching the "Ours": the students and caring adults who are not connected through the local youth leaders in the area.

Listen to Steven Woods, who leads the youth ministry at Christ Church San Diego and is a part of the PUSD network, and then start the conversation with youth workers in your area!

Saturating Campuses with The Life Book

Imagine having the youth in your group saturate their high school campus with God's Word so that every student gets a copy in one week! That is what The Life Book is doing on campuses across America.

I had an opportunity to meet Carl Blunt, the author and CEO of The Life Book. He was at the Campus Alliance Summit in Kansas City, where denomination and youth organization representatives came together to discuss how to reach every student in every school in America.

Church and Parachurch School Partnerships

Have you ever wondered how to better reach students at the seconday school campuses in your area? How about thinking of your relationship with parachurch or church-assisting ministries as a partnership, not a competition?

Ryan Sharp is the associate pastor of Lambs Fellowship in Murrieta, CA and has had years of experience in partnering with parachurch organizations to effectively reach students on campus. He was literally raised with campus ministry for his father, Monty Sharp, has directed Student Venture Temecula since 1983. The Ministry impacts over 3000 teenagers working in partnership with local churches.

We caught up with Ryan Sharp at the Summit on Schools in San Diego as he shared with youth leaders his perspective on student ministry last August.

Take a look at this video to see how you can more effectively reach students on their campuses through partnerships with church-assisting ministries.

We are excited to partner with a film coming to theaters this Friday!

Expecting Mary is the story of pregnant young Mary, who's had all the trappings of an upscale life, but it's only when she finds herself in a small New Mexico town, in a down-trodden trailer park, that she learns the real meaning of love, sacrifice and family.

The film is working with us to encourage youth workers to use it as an opportunity to expose teens to the gospel. An "Expecting Mary" event will reach out to believers as well as create a comfortable environment for youth to invite their friends who are spiritually seeking at any level.

We have been able to secure 150 tickets to give away. In order to win the tickets, you need to:

  1. Check to see if the movie is premiering in your city by visiting http://www.expectingmary.com/playing.html.
  2. Then the first five Youth Leaders in each area to send an email to Korbin Duley get five free tickets to the premiere.

If the movie is not currently playing near you visit http://www.expectingmary.com/faith/ to bring it to your town.

There is also some good information on how to use the film with your youth group to start conversations here.

Pastoring at the National Youth Workers Convention

Youth ministry is a joyous, but at times, a very hard calling. Regular struggles can occur with parents, students, leadership, finances . . . and the list goes on.

Who pastors the youth leaders through these dangers, toils and snares?

Uniting an Island

What does it take to unite youth workers who all live on the same island, but act like there was no one else there?

Jon Burcombe is the youth pastor at Avalon Community Church. At Spirit West Coast a year ago he shared with me how hard it was to get youth workers on Catalina Island to BE together, let alone work together. I saw him again this year and he talked about what worked to bring youth leaders together to reach teenagers. Today thay have an active network that is reaching teenagers on the island. Listen to his story.

Empowering Youth to Serve Communities

How can a youth group make positive change in their community? Rudy Tapote shares some ways that his youth group has demonstrated Christ to the community through their actions.

Collegiate Day of Prayer is Feb 25

Almost 40% of NNYM members list “college” as part of their ministry involvement. Although most of our focus is on middle school and high school-age youth, an important national event for collegians is scheduled for February 25: The Collegiate Day of Prayer. Please keep reading for more information from the organizers...

Reaching Teenagers in Asia

Toni and I recently returned from China, where a group of us were invited by church authorities to learn more about the church there and about the nature of youth work.

Needless to say, it was a fascinating and educational experience! Part of that was to interface with our Network counterparts in Asia who are responsible for networking youth workers. This is an interview with the leader of the Asian Youth Commission (their word for "network"), Joseph Lee from Seoul, Korea. He shares the progress of their efforts to set up networks all over Asia.

Networking Compton to Reach Youth

In October I met Danny Pyon at a SoCal Network Summit. After finishing a doctorate on global urban youth culture, God placed on his heart a burden for the Crips and the Bloods. So, he moved to Compton two years ago.

SoCal Collaborations

Recently a group of Southern California network coordinators met for their annual summit. I had an opportunity to interview Mike Brimmage of Biola University and Al Siebert, the executive director of Youth for Christ in SoCal.

Check out this video where they share about their collaborations to bring the university, churches and para-church organizations together to impact thousand of teenagers throughout Southern California.

Learning from 10 Freshmen

The following letter was in our local paper, written by 10 freshmen from the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah School District in Wisconsin:

We wanted to share an experience we had recently while celebrating during our homecoming week. On the night of our dance, ten of us went to dinner at an area restaurant, The Lake Street Café. As the SCCA regional races were in our area, the restaurant was very full. We were sure some tables initially were not thrilled when ten teenagers walked in the room as they were planning to have a nice, quiet dinner ay a very nice restaurant.

Unity on the Baseball Field

Baseball is a great game of competition. However at the last game I went to, I saw how powerful it can be when athletes cooperate to share Jesus...

Why Network?

That's one of the topics discussed in the new Youth Leader University under the Training tab. See the answer here.
