The Roundtable on Living Missionally to the Ends of the Earth contains information from Terry Linhart, Don Richter, Hilary Alan and Steve Corbett, while Brad Griffin and Kara Powell talk to you about Sticky Service. Jon Huckins shares about Cultivating Sent Ones; and Jeff discusses the fact that while youth are long on passion, they’re short on experience.

Meanwhile, Suanne Camfield wants to help you break the habits that no longer serve your youth group and develop new habits that work for your team.

Global Youth Ministry Consultation

Is it possible to form an “international network of youth ministries?” Twenty-five international youth ministry leaders gathered in Pompano Beach, Florida December 4-7, 2012 to discuss the possibilities. These hand-picked delegates – both men and women, younger and older – represented 15 countries and five continents. They prayed, dialogued, reviewed research and shared personal insights. They shared what God is doing among youth in their countries. And, they poured themselves into and assessing what a global platform for youth ministry networking might look like.

Fundraising for Mission Trips

Often times, fundraising for your upcoming mission trip can get a bit stale. Every year it's the same old ideas - bake sales, car washes and having the students do work for people within your church. As these tend to work time and time again, sometimes giving can start to diminish.

Here are a handful of creative ideas to help keep your fundraising fresh:

Sustaining a Partnership for 17 Years

This weekend, my wonderful wife Donna and I leave for Russia to lead our seventeenth mission trip there. Those who know me understand that these two weeks in Russia are a part of my “second life.” I love the opportunity to get back to Russia and focus on reaching out to non-believing youth in a foreign culture as well as ministering to a great group of youth from the USA. We will be joined by another group from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida who will help us host a five day English camp for selected students from Moscow.

Want to Network with the Newsboys?

The Newsboys are being intentional about evangelism on their "God's Not Dead" tour for 2012. They have asked gifted evangelist and my boss, Bob Lenz, to partner with them by giving a clear Gospel message at each city they vist. In order to keep this from being a tour that simply passes through an area entertaining folks, I will be working with friend and coleaugue Kris Wood to network in each city on the tour.

December YouthWorker Journal

Where does the time go? 2011 is almost gone! We’re bringing you the final 2011 digital edition of YouthWorker Journal.

This issue includes:

  • A look at "The Gospel According to Twilight"
  • Matt Redman’s argument that "Passionate Worship Is About Living, Not Merely Singing"

What We've Gotten Away From…

I've been involved with in Youth Ministry for just about 20 years now. Though there have been many tweaks and occasional shifts away from the norm, the typical youth ministry program has included some form of hang time, game time, worship time and teaching (“talk”) time. These four elements are about a predictable as my desire for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert!

Back From Camp; What's Next?

I’ve read some amazing stories on blogs and Facebook of the things God has done at camps, retreats and on mission trips this summer! I believe youth ministry is alive and kicking and God is at work, but was it just there (on the trip) that the Lord moved? Of course not, but for some reason growth and change there seems more obvious, practical and tangible. I’d love to see these things here (at home) become just as evident.

God Is A Dreamer

Last week I had the chance to chat with Jeff Goins from Adventures in Missions about a new project he is working on. The project is called Kingdom Dreams, which is a new approach to helping people find their ministry calling.

Kingdom Dreams desires to inspire, equip and resource people to pursue one's God-given dreams and passions. It's the catalyst for the next generation of Christians focused on changing the world. It offers people the space, freedom, guidance, and confidence to dream and experiment, through the channel of meaningful personal connections.

If Bulgarian youth workers ruled the world...

What would it look like? Honestly, probably a bit messy! Even the nicest, gentlest most godly Bulgarian turns into a monster behind the wheel of a car. But putting that to one side, I think it could be a better place....

Here's what those of us in EEA21, the European sister movement to NNYM, think we can all learn from Bulgaria:

3 Day Respawn - Christian Gaming Community

What is 3 Day Respawn?

Biblical Truth, Brotherly Accountability, and Godly Love.

3 Day Respawn is a ministry which aims to provide Godly fellowship, companionship, and Biblical direction by offering a method of connecting with others through the video games based website, community events, and resources for anyone who plays games or knows someone who does. The ministry is based on a social media (Facebook) style community website which helps christian video game players connect with one another. The result is an experience of fellowship and mutual christian edification which is in stark contrast to the average video game playing experience. Our goal is to make disciples of all nations.

Taking a 9-Month Mission Trip

YW.net Editor's Note: Ever think of sending teenagers from your youth group on a 9-month mission trip? Well, Travis Deans is a youth pastor and network coordinator in Western Pennsylvania. He challenged his students to see their campuses as their mission field for the entire school year. Check out this video as Travis, and some of the students he works with, share the effect of their 9-month mission trip.

October Justice Awareness

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of meeting Phil Cunningham and hear more about his dream of Steps of Justice and their October Justice Awareness Month.

NNYM: “Phil, how did this project get started?”

Phil: “In 2004 I was asked to write a prayer focus on areas of injustice. I researched and wrote on things like human trafficking, poverty, the sex industry, hunger, gender injustice, etc. The more I looked around the more I saw just how screwed up the world was and how far off from completing the work of Jesus I was.”

NNYM: “How did that perspective change you?”

Phil: “My next step after the prayer focus was to tell as many people as I could about how messed up the world is. I started talking about it to my friends, in church, at Bible studies and prayer meetings. Everywhere I went and everyone I met knew that I cared about these issues. After a while this step wasn’t enough, it was time to take another step.”

NNYM: “What was the next step you took?”

Phil: “How could I just go around talking about this stuff if I was not doing anything about it personally outside of making awareness of the issues? My thought, make a calendar/prayer action guide that will help connect people to other ministries and ways of fighting injustice. So, a year ago I started thinking of creative ways and ideas to present these issues to people over a period of 30 days in ways that brought awareness coupled with prayer and action. So we created the Steps of Justice 30 day action guide and web site.”

NNYM: “Now that you have this created what is next for you?”

Phil: “Starting on October 4 and going through the end of the month we will be walking through what it looks like to take up the call as the Church of Jesus to “do Justice.” Through stories of people who have bravely answered Gods call, the October Justice Month points to practical and biblical ways that you can be involved in bringing God’s justice into an unjust world.”

NNYM: “How can people get involved with October Justice Awareness Month?”

Phil: “Challenge yourself to walk out the action days we post on our blog, engage with the media and pray for the hurting, the broken, the poor and the oppressed. Don’t feel overwhelmed, you can’t engage with everything. Pray and ask God what things he is most burdening your heart for throughout the month and dive into that. Finally, please take time to respond on our Facebook group. Post your comments, your thoughts, your actions and any stories that have happened as a result of “doing justice.” Your stories will inspire others to engage and create their own cool stories.”

NNYM: "What do you hope comes from this month?"

Phil: "I hope that justice issues can be brought to light and that youth groups can find ways to enagge their kids to be part of the solutions in real pratical ways."

I encourage you to explore Steps of Justice and see how your group could put this resource into action and be on the lookout for them at the NYWC this year.

Coming or Going?

Instead of focusing on getting students to bring a friend to church, let’s instead focus on getting our students to bring Jesus to their friends. Rather than trying to entertain students to come to an event so we can share Jesus with their friends, let’s create ways to allow our students to share Jesus with their friends wherever they are. Let’s challenge our students not to stay in our churches or programs, but to go out into the world and be the church that God is calling them to be.

10 Keys to Leading a Great Mission Trip

For the past few months, I have been making presentations to adult volunteers who will be going on summer mission trips with LeaderTreks. I do this every year, but this year I wanted to focus on helping adult volunteers really understand the purpose for student missions. So I created this presentation called 10 Keys to Leading a Great Mission Trip. Ten things may seem like a lot, but all of these things are important.

The Youth Worker's Secret Allies

It’s been estimated there are more than 600,000 Christian public school teachers who are educating more than 50 million American students. In most cases, the teachers spending many hours per week with your students could be your best allies in youth ministry. You just need to be aware of how to help them and how they can assist you.

After-school and before-school meetings are permissible on the school grounds. For example...

The Adventure of Faith

When was the last time God asked you to do something that seemed totally absurd, even outrageous to you?

Does an example pop into your mind? Then perhaps you will be able to understand how Abram must have felt when God said, “Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” With no more clarity than that, Abram packed it up and left the familiar behind in response to what he was sure was God’s voice.

What a life-changing adventure Abram embarked on! First, God chose him. Then God called him. Abram said “yes” to God, even though he did not have all the answers, and launched out on this historical pilgrimage. He blazed a trail for all of us, a model of what it looks like to be a person that walks with God by faith.
